The 2012 Great California ShakeOut Earthquake Drill

BOMA San Francisco Members:

The 2012 Great California ShakeOut earthquake drill is now four weeks from today, October 18th at 10:18 a.m., and more than 7.9 million people have been registered to participate!

If you participated in the past but have not yet renewed your registration for 2012, or if you are not sure if you are registered this year, please take a minute to log in today at ShakeOut.org/california/login. If you are already registered for 2012, thank you! Millions of people will practice earthquake safety and get prepared this year... because you, your organization, or your school is leading the way.

BOMA Members are encouraged to watch a great video from California Emergency Management Agency and the American Red Cross to learn how to prepare, survive, and recover!

Is your drill a potential ShakeOut Media Venue?

Will your drill on October 18th include interesting visuals or activities of potential interest to the news media? If so, please email info@shakeout.org with details, or complete our event submission form. We may include your event on our list of ShakeOut Media Venues which will be online soon.

Who will ShakeOut with you?

A great way to help others in your network prepare to survive and recover is to encourage them to register to participate in the Great California ShakeOut.  Let them know that you are participating and ask them to join you by registering at ShakeOut.org/california. Spread the word at family gatherings, community events, and work meetings, and online with email, facebook, or twitter. You can also place one of the ShakeOut web banners on your organization's website, display posters in your office, distribute flyers, and use other materials available on the ShakeOut Resources page.

Citywide Sirens To Sound As Part Of Great California ShakeOut Earthquake Drill - October 21st at 10:21 a.m.

BOMA San Francisco Members:

The City’s Outdoor Public Warning System Sirens will be activated as part of the Great California ShakeOut – the statewide Drop, Cover and Hold On earthquake drill – on October 21 at 10:21 am.  The sirens will be sounded, followed by a voice message indicating that it is a test.  This is the second year the City is utilizing the system for the ShakeOut drill. San Francisco residents and visitors should not be alarmed by the fact that the sirens are sounding at a time other than the regular Tuesday noon weekly test.

The City is participating in the third annual Great California ShakeOut, the statewide earthquake drill.  To date, more than 341,000 people in San Francisco have registered to participate in the drill, and more than 7.2 million have registered statewide.  Schools, businesses, non-profit organizations, government agencies and individuals are encouraged to increase their level of emergency preparedness by registering for the drill.  Click here for more information.

The Great California Shake Out & Big Rumble - October 15, 2009

On October 15, 2009 at 10:15 a.m., join other businesses and individuals in a statewide earthquake preparedness drill. Please click here for more information, and to register (no charge).

The 10:15 a.m. drop, cover, hold drill on 10/15/09 is part of a week-long series of events, called The Big Rumble, designed to increase understanding of what to do when an earthquake occurs. Everyone is encouraged to:
  • Conduct a drop, cover and hold drill
  • Take an inventory of disaster supplies (see www.72hours.org for tips)
  • Update emergency and continuity of operations plans
  • Conduct an evacuation drill
  • Update family and business emergency notification rosters
  • Identify a relocation site for both work and home
  • Take pictures of your assets & make copies of important documents
  • Conduct a stay-in-place drill
Participation in the Great California Shakeout & Big Rumble and implementing the above suggestions is an excellent way to follow up on BOMA San Francisco’s Emergency Preparedness workshop held on October 1st. The workshop discussed the essentials of emergency preparedness and the best practices and lessons learned from the Ferry Building evacuation drill conducted on August 19th. Both the Ferry Building drill and the workshop were produced by members of BOMA San Francisco’s Emergency Preparedness Committee—click here for more information (and emergency preparedness resources).

If you’d like to get involved with this fast-growing and dynamic committee, please email John Bozeman, BOMA San Francisco's Legislative Assistant, at johnb@boma.com. The committee meets on the second Tuesday of every month from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the top (48th floor) of The Pyramid Center. Our next meeting will be on October 13th.

Thank you for sharing this information with tenants and customers.
